Tips for SOVA End of the Year Exams
Format of the Exam:
Answer three out of four questions in this 2 hour Paper.
Section A: Structured Questions
This section requires you to answer a three part question about a single artwork:
(a) Asking you to describe the artwork.
(b) Requires you to explain and analyze the way the artist uses principles of art (lines, composition, colour etc) to express his thoughts through the artwork.
(c) Wants you to think about the artist’s intentions, on how the artwork connects to the art movement of the times or how the artwork could be a response to what was happening to society / a social commentary. It is okay to bring in other relevant examples of artwork that could support your argument.
Section B: Structured Comparison Questions
This section requires you to answer a three part question comparing two similar artworks: (One question will usually be asking about two paintings, while the other is usually non-traditional artworks like photography/new-media artwork/sculptor etc)
(a) Asking you to describe both artworks and the materials used in the artworks (in the case of non-painting works like sculptures or installation art).
(b) Requires you to explain and analyze the areas of similarities and differences between the artworks, using art vocabulary to compare how the artworks have been created and how the artist could have intended for it to affect the audience.
(c) Wants you to explore the relationship between the two artworks. Usually the artworks used for juxtaposition are from different preceding movements, and often influenced or was influenced by each other.
